June Edition 2010

Well, wish I could report that we escaped terrible weather for Manson Crater days for the third year in a row, but to no avail.  Anybody else out there thinking a celebration in early August sounds good?  Just putting that out there for discussion.  And of course the five inches or so of rain received could not have come on a worse possible day.  Not only for everyone enjoying the Crater Days weekend, but also the 96 golfers that were eagerly looking forward to the second annual Middleton Classic.  Elias Johnson had done a ton of preparation for this and was excited to present a top shelf event.  Good news is that rain is pretty much out of the picture for the remainder of the week.

I will give a quick summary of tournaments I have stats for but always feel free to visit our outstanding website at
www.golfmanson.com. On April 25th we had a two person best shot.  The group of Sorenson/Kirtpatrick took first with a 64 with Hoefing/Hanks settling for second at 66. Winning the first flight was Stiles/Anderson with a 77 and Scott/Bianchi second with a 78.

On May 8th a 4 person best shot was held.  The winning team shot a 60 and consisted of Ackerson, Ackerson, Valdez and Witcke. Tying, but placing second was the group of Bickel, Long, Culver and Long.  There was also tying scores for the first flight at 68.  Winning on tie breaker was Birkey, Birkey, Birkey and Gailey  Second place to Pederson, Hartzler, Mike, Tom.

The always popular 8" cup tournament was shortened to a nine hole event due to rain that day.  Doc Huseman won this event once again with an impressive score of 26 with another Fort Dodger, Kevin Alt finishing second at 27.  There are a lot of flight winners for this event so please reference the website for total results.

The Open was held on a beautiful day on Saturday, June 19th.  We were excited to show the course off with all of the seeding and fertilizer we have done with the fairways.  They are about as lush as I have ever seen them.  Hopefully the water this past weekend will drain quickly and not cause any loss of fairways.  This years open will be remembered for the first hole in one ever on hole #9.  This is a dog leg par 4 so quite an impressive shot.  Neil Doak out of Dysart, IA made the fortunate shot. Kevin Alt was successful in defending this championship with a 3 round score of 100, which I believe is just one shot over the course record.  Shane Carlson of Gowrie was two back at 102 with fellow Gowrie native Cole Jaschke one more back at 103.  Neil Doak rounded those placing in the championship flight finishing at 104.  Once again please visit the website for complete results.

Upcoming events include the Annual Clare/Barnum War on Saturday, July 3.  This was moved up one week earlier than initially indicated on calendar due to a wedding conflict.  On July 4th the ladies board will be hosting a community breakfast from 7:30 am to 10:00 am.  Biscuits and gravy as well as pancakes will be served up for your eating pleasure.  The annual Rost Outing takes place on that same day from 7:00 am - 1:00 pm. Rost Gang make sure to bring an empty stomach that morning.  The course remains open during this event.  The Ladies will be hosting a four gal best shot on Thursday, July 8th with tee time at 10:00 am.  If you have a young ones in the family that golf or are looking to learn more about the game there will be a Youth Camp on July 12th-14th. This will culminate with a 9 hole tournament on  Thursday, July 22nd.  That busy week will conclude with our biggest couples night of the year on Friday, July 23rd with Survivor Night.  Karaoke will follow this special golf evening.  Get your team together and see if your team can conquer the special challenges and enjoy the fun.

Other events to look out for is the Men's Stag sweet corn feed which will be sooner than later with the excellent growing season this year.  Also, probably in August when yours truly runs couples night, we will be putting together a "Win it in a Minute" event following golf in the clubhouse.  This will be tailored after the TV show of the same title.

After two years of having no Monday league rain outs, we have already had two and working on the third as I type this.  Damn that Law of Averages thing!  We do look forward to a great year with 31 teams participating this year.  It is great to see a lot of new faces!  Baseball and softball seasons will be winding down soon and that will get the golf course even busier.  I will end with a couple of comments that I have observed in my few visits to the course so far this year.  We would appreciate it if anyone enjoying sunflower seeds during their rounds to please not spit the shells on the greens.  The mowers don't pick these up very well and often times they just get dragged along the green.  Secondly is to request that everyone please try to fix their ball marks on the greens.  Vera Erpalding in Wesley taught all of us kids years ago to fix your ball mark and then look for at least two more.  If everyone did this the greens would look incredible.  There are usually free ball mark repair tools on the counter in the pro shop area of the golf course.

Well, keep those gas tanks filled up in the lawn mowers and hopefully I will be back in about a month.
