Country Club Corner
August Edition
By Randy Besch -
Published in the Calhoun County Journal-Herald
Well, a lot has come and gone since the last
article. After an extremely wet start to the season in April/May the summer
weather has turned out to be quite cooperative. The early portion of August
ushered in an unexpected challenge for your golf board. Our greens keeper
received an offer he could not turn down over at Willow Ridge Golf Club near
Fort Dodge. Fortunately, we have two local members that have worked along with
our former greens keeper as well as previous greens keepers to step in and take
care of the course through the fall. Todd Partlow and Larry Freese have already
been very active out on the course aside from the usual mowing to keep up on.
We have had several tournaments since June and here
are those results.
The first to report is the Men's Open held in June.
Former Cougar player and Manson native Justin Kean came back home to win the
event with a three round total of 108. Brad Hoefing finished 3 strokes back at
111. Also at 111 was a Jones and at 113 to finish 4th was Andy Jepsen. 1st
flight winners were:
Johnson at 78, Peterson at 79, Dutcher at 79 and
another Jones at 80.
2nd Flight winners were Jim Schlapkohl at 83,
Johnson at 84, Dallas Scott 84, and Bernie Rost 85.
3rd Flight winners were Toby Beneke 89, Meridith 89,
Christensen 89, and Mike Jepsen at 91.
In early August the men's Club tournament was held.
It came down to a two horse race between Brad Hoefing and John Hanks. Hoefing
held off Hanks for a one stroke victory and his first club championship. Total
score was 110 with Hanks one back at 111. Randy Besch finished 3rd at 120 and
Kevin Stiles 4th at 122.
1st Flight winners were Van Ness 86, Rusty Caquelin
89, George Lawman 91 and Andy Gentle at 92.
2nd Flight winners were Craig Thompson 93, Justin
Reuter 96, David Callahan 98 and Anderson 99.
There was a seniors division as well. Neal Miller
ran away with this with a 3 round score of 114. Finishing second was Dallas
Scott at 119 and Bernie Rost third with a 122. In the first flight John
Richardson at a 81, Jay Collins 84, David Nissen 84 and Paul Pelz 85.
The couples club was held one week later. Taking
the win with a commanding score of 72 was Jim Johnson and Nancy Seavert. Randy
& Denise Besch followed with a 78, Kari Seavert/Marc Hoefing 79, Doc/Kathy
Johnson 81 and John/Lu Richardson at 82. 1st Flight winners were Tom/Sandy
Sweeney 91, Corey/Marni Moodey 92, Rusty/Raenae Caquelin 92, Chuck/Julie Howell
92 and George/Jodi Lawman at 93.
The popular 3 round Ryder Cup tournament was held
recently. This format has two person teams play best ball, best shot and
alternate rounds. Winning with a very impressive 97 was the Josh Reed team.
Finishing next with a 102 was Dillehay/Jones and then Besch/Tucker with a 108.
1st Flight winners were Long/Culver 112, Perry/Kern 114 and Whaley/Gentle 114.
2nd Flight winners were Lawman/Trott 122, Freese/Williams 124 and finally
Long/Bell at 124.
The last item to report was the end of year two
person best shot league results. We had 16 teams and had a great year. The
response was very favorable to this format and we are looking forward to many
more teams getting on board next year. The scores are handicapped each week and
the teams played for weekly flag events and net score totals. We also played
for total points for the year.
The top 6 point totals for the year were as
follows: Bernie Rost/Dallas Scott at 119, Paul Mogenson/Jason Jones 108, Mike
Gentle/Brian Peterson 107, John/Lu Richardson 103, Rusty Caquelin/Larry Freese
99 and a tie for 6th between Randy Besch/Kevin Stiles and Tom Sweeney/Dennis
Gochee with 98 points.
This past weekend we also had our league
tournament. Taking first place with a gross score of 68 and net score of 67 was
the team of Todd Williams and Matt Kittleson. They edged out Stiles/Besch by .4
who fired a 62 and had a net score of 67.4. Finishing 3rd was Matt Weishaar/Brad
Hoefing who scored a 67 and had a net score of 69.2. 4th place was Adam Koster/Eric
Miller who had a scored a 73 and finished 69.4 net. And 5th place belonged to
Gentle/Peterson with a gross score of 80 and net score of 70.2.
Besch/Stiles also fired the low 9 hole gross score
for the year shooting a blistering 29 in the opening round of the tournament.
Once again this was a great format allowing tremendous flexibility to play your
rounds each week.
We will get the sign up sheet up early again next
year for league.
There are two tournaments remaining. A couples best
shot tournament on Sunday, August 31 with a 12:00 shotgun start and then a 4
person best shot on Saturday, September 27th also starting at 12:00.
Friday night couples night will continue as long as we have
people showing up to play it. Men's stag will continue through September and
October as weather allows. Hopefully the weather will continue its present
course for a great harvest. Good luck to the Cougar volleyball, cross country
and football teams as well as the Manson Sharks youth football program.
