Better late than never. This article
will serve as a book end for the spring article done back in April. Since it so
close to end of the golf season, Phil Calmer suggested I keep it short and
simply write "we're closed". However, there is much to report on what has been
a fairly good year considering the poor economic times. The weather provided a
lot of cooler weather for golf this summer and for the first time since I have
lived here since 1996, no closure of the course due to excess rain. It is
somewhat ironic that with that being said the golf course has a $16,000
assessment to pay relating to the engineering expenses on the proposed drainage
project last year.
I am going to provide a quick summary of
some of the tournaments held this summer. Complete results can be found at the
website that is updated by board member George Lawman. We are very fortunate to
have Georges expertise available to us. Not only for the website but for
creating our golf league spreadsheets.
One of the first tournaments of the year
was a 4 person best shot On May 9th. The winning score was a 58 by the Pals,
Cummins, Kinseth and Kinseth group. On May 27th a two couple alternate shot was
held. The winning team was the Marles, Cummins, Hull and Hull group with a 69.
On the first weekend of June we had the popular 8" cup tournaments. This first
was a one man scramble won by Doc Huseman with a scorching 53. On the following
day another two couple alternate shot was held with the 8" cups. The winning
score was Whitehill/Condon with a 67.
On June 20th the Manson Men's Open was
held. There was some special golf played that day with the winner eventually
being Kevin Alt with a score of 98. He held off Manson native Ryan Eldridge by
one stroke. During the championship round, Ryan fired a 30 which tied the
course 9 hole record. Ryan came within an inch of making a putt on #9 which
would have broke the record and tie Alt.
On June 28th the first annual Middleton
Classic was held. This was a two person best shot format with around a 100
golfers participating. This event was organized by Elias Johnson, former MNW
grad and reporter for WHO TV in Des Moines. Proceeds from the tournament will
be used for an MNW scholarship in memory of Joe Middleton who taught and coached
golf at MNW. It was a great day for Elias as he and teammate Ryan Kinseth won
the event with a three round total of 88.
July 11th was a three person best shot
which was one by Vanderhoff/Bank/Johnson with a score of 59.
Also in July there was a three day junior
golf camp held. I was out of state when this took place but I understand it was
well attended and we had some great volunteers work with the kids in various
stations. The worked on the basics of golf as well as fundamentals of good golf
etiquette. Volunteers working the camp included Neal Miller, Brad Hoefing, Jim
Schlapkohl, Dean Whaley, Angie McColley and Julie Walstrom. 18 youths attended
the camp.
The next three tournaments took place in
late July and early August and all were club tournaments. The ladies got things
started with Betty Sweet winning the senior division. Whitni Warnke won in
exciting fashion with a playoff win over Angie McColley. The men's senior
division was won by Bernie Rost, another first time club tournament winner.
Brad Hoefing added to his hardware by running away with the regular men's
division by 16 strokes. The couples club also needed a playoff to decide the
winners. Randy and Denise Besch won in a one hole playoff over Shawn and Leslie
Collins.
On August 20th the always popular Ryder
Cup was held. This three round format was won by team of Randy Besch and Kevin
Stiles. By mistake, we scheduled our couples best shot the week prior to Labor
day weekend, which is our usual date. This turned out to be good mistake as
over 100 players signed up. The Pals/DeGroot group won the event. And in the
last tournament of the year, a 4 person best shot was just held this past
weekend. Shooting a scorching 57 was the foursome of Kirk Warnke, Steve Tucker,
Brad Hoefing and Besch.
This past year was also the 2nd year of
our two person best shot league. We pretty much doubled up the number of
players from last year in what has turned into a very fun and flexible format.
Winning the season point standings was the team of Jason Jones (FD) and Mike
Dillehay. This group came right back in the handicapped league tournament as
they scored a gross score of 61 and net score of 66.66. David George and Neal
Miller shot a gross of 64 and a net score of 68.00 while third place went to
Mark Tague and Neal Eischeid with a gross of 69 and net of 68.34. In Group II
the winning team was Kim Rost and Brandt Rost shooting a 73 gross and 66.86
net. 2nd place to Jesse Grossnickle and Joel Hudson with a gross of 73 and net
of 68.44. And finally 3rd place to Rusty Caquelin and Larry Freese who shot 73
gross with a 69.00 net. We look forward to increasing players in 2010 from the
58 of this year.
Finally, the fall appreciation party will take place this
Saturday, October 3rd. A potluck dinner will commence at 6:00 with the club
providing the meat. We will have karaoke following dinner at around 7:30-8:00
p.m. As always this is open to EVERYONE. You do not have to be a member to
attend this event. Come on out and help us celebrate a successful season.Randy
